The UK drone sector is ambitious, with businesses of all sizes developing increasingly sophisticated applications of drone technology and clear plans to scale. This ambition aligns with the government’s objective of becoming the fastest-growing economy in the G7, which is supported by an industrial strategy that recognises the potential of the drone sector. However, shortcomings in the current policy and regulatory environment risk constraining this growth. For example, where drone policy is designed to eliminate risk entirely, it can unintentionally limit the use of drones in applications where they would otherwise reduce risk to humans performing dangerous tasks, constraining growth in these areas. By working together and co-creating a more supportive policy environment, the government and the drones sector will both benefit from unlocking the sector’s potential.
The UK Drones Alliance (UKDA) exists to address this joint challenge by providing a collective forum through which the sector can engage with government more coherently and constructively. By bringing together businesses from across the drones ecosystem, the UKDA will act as a collective voice for the sector, supporting clearer communication with policymakers to improve understanding of sector challenges and address barriers to growth.
Central to this approach is the principle that all parts of the sector should be represented. Small, medium and large organisations each experience regulation differently and contribute distinct perspectives. The UKDA is designed to ensure that this diversity is reflected its government engagement, enabling a more comprehensive articulation of the sectors needs and priorities.
The UKDA will ensure that businesses are kept up to date with political, policy and regulatory developments, with clear analysis of the implications for the sector. Alongside this, a regular programme of events will provide members with opportunities to engage directly with policymakers and contribute to a more informed and constructive dialogue.
